MSN Search Plugins for Firefox

10:28 am - September 29, 2005 in MSN Search's WebLog

Internet Explorer is my browser of choice and I m eagerly looking forward to the enhancements coming in IE 7. nbsp; However, some of our customers prefer using Firefox and we respect that choice. nbsp; Some developers in our user community have created Firefox plug ins to make it easy to do searches on MSN from the Firefox search box. nbsp; Even though it s currently buried in Firefox under Add Engines Find lots of other search engines , it seems that our customers have been finding it since we re listed as one of the most popular search engine plugins. I use Firefox sometimes in the course of my job and when I do, I love having the MSN Search engine plugged in up in the chrome. nbsp; If you re currently a Firefox user I hope you ll enjoy this little nugget. For more MSN Search fun with Firefox or IE! , try out the PDC version of MSN Search enabled by a Trixie Greasemonkey script. We are committed to building the world s best search engine and making it accessible wherever our customers want it. nbsp; It s why we did our recent work at the PDC to announce our search SDK. nbsp; It s also why there is now a beta of MSN Search on mobile phones. nbsp; Leave a comment tell us where you d like to see us make our search engine easier to use. And if you re a Firefox user, add MSN to the list by going to the MSN Firefox Plugin Page and clicking on the link for your market. Ken MossGeneral Manager, MSN Web Search

Start.com Browser Support

3:12 am - September 26, 2005

As explained per Scott Isaac s: Quote Start.com currently runs in the latest versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer although there are some bugs in some versions . We ve received feedback questioning why we don t support additional browsers. The browsers we support is currently a technology driven decision. We want to support additional browsers, but not all browsers support the necessary standards. I am going to explain a few technical issues we have faced that are critical to us expanding Start.com s support. First, the browser must support the DHTML event and object model. I am not going to list the specific standards, but assuming a browser can meet the following three requirements, the remaining support will most likely be sufficient. Support for dynamically downloading code We download most scripts by dynamically creating SCRIPT tags. Unfortunately, we have found some browsers do not expose any events or properties that we can use to detect the script has been loaded. Specifically, we have not found an appropriate onload event or readystate type poperty in Safari. Support for adding custom properties to base DOM objects Our goal is to avoid writing browser specific code within our application implementation. To accomplish this, our framework equalizes the object models and even extends built in behavior by extending the prototypes of the base DOM objects. For example, we add properties to the base HTMLElement and Event objects. Specifically, we have not found a way to do this in Opera. Support for parsing and retrieving xml tags We embed custom tags into our documents. These tags need to be properly parsed into their appropriate tree. For example, in the HTML document we may have tags such as: lt;web:binding selector quot;.list quot; type quot;Demo.List quot; gt; lt;web:defaults gt; lt; web:defaults gt; lt; web:binding gt; We need to be able to query and extract these elements, their associated attributes, and any child elements. These represent the typical requirements that have blocked us from running on a larger set of browsers. If you represent a browser that does not run Start.com, we would appreciate any help resolving these issues. You can reach me directly via the e mail address listed in my profile, or you can contact the start.com team directly. For the rest of you, we are working hard at enabling Start.com on the widest array of browsers and devices.

We the Bloggers…

9:00 pm - September 22, 2005

Blogs have given individuals of any and every background the ability to freely speak their minds and share information with anyone who chooses to read it, at any time they wish to do so. Bloglines was created for people as a window to access this world of dynamic content and a way to participate in its creation. We believe blogs have helped enable an open exchange of information that has never before been possible. As some of you may have heard, the Federal Election Commission FEC is reviewing its regulations concerning political speech on the Internet, including blog activity. Bloglines is committed to the continuation of open exchanges of information and opinions throughout the blogosphere and the Internet in general. Today, the Committee on House Administration is having a hearing on this issue. In the spirit of these beliefs, I have provided the Committee with the following statement. We encourage you to express your opinion on this matter in any forum you choose. Mark Fletcher and the Bloglines team Statement by Mark Fletcher Founder, Vice President and General Manager of Bloglines Concerning Regulation of Political Speech on the Internet Before the Committee on House Administration U.S. House of Representatives September 22, 2005 Chairman Ney and Members of the Committee: 160; 160; 160; 160; 160;On behalf of Bloglines and our users, I am pleased to provide the following statement concerning regulation of political speech on the Internet. Bloglines, founded in 2003, is a free online service for searching, subscribing, creating and sharing news feeds, blogs and rich web content. The company is a property of Ask Jeeves, Inc., a wholly owned business of IAC InterActiveCorp, and is headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area. 160; 160; 160; 160; 160;We believe it s critical for us to speak out on behalf of individual bloggers who, while empowered by the Internet, have a limited capacity to carry messages to Congress. We commend you and the Committee for convening this hearing and focusing needed attention on this issue. 160; 160; 160; 160; 160;We urge Congress and the FEC to ensure that the Internet, particularly blog activity, remains free from campaign finance regulation. While regulation of campaign financing plays an important role in maintaining public confidence in our political system, we believe the significant public policy interests in encouraging the Internet as a forum for free or low cost speech and open information exchange should stand paramount. 160; 160; 160; 160; 160;Linking to campaign websites, quoting from or republishing campaign materials and even providing a link for donations to a candidate, if done without compensation, should not result in a blog being deemed to have made a contribution to a campaign or trigger reporting requirements. 160; 160; 160; 160; 160;Blogs permit the expression of and access to a diversity of political opinions and other information on a scale never before seen. This speech must remain free and not be discouraged by burdensome regulation. As such, it should be explicit that the activities of bloggers are covered by the press exemption of Sections 100.73 and 100.132. 160; 160; 160; 160; 160;Should the FEC fail to provide this critical protection to Internet activity, or if courts determine the Commission lacks statutory authority, we urge Congress to promptly move legislation to achieve the goal. Thank you for this opportunity to share our comments on this important issue. 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160; 160;
