11:29 am - June 30, 2006 in blog.snap.com

As some of you have recently been emailing and commenting on, yes, we are postponing the announcement of the contest winner and posting of the awards video until after the July 4th holiday weekend. Due to a number of internal decisions, we have opted to wait until Wednesday, July 5th, to make the announcement and release the video.

Please bear with us, and (if you can) wait a bit longer for this all to happen. We are committed to the contest and thank you for your interest and participation in getting the word out.

Please stay tuned and thanks again!

Sunny in Seattle

10:07 am - June 30, 2006 in Live Search's WebLog

Betsynote: As I type this in for Jamie, it is hot. Darn hot. Too sunny-must-go-kayak-on-the-lake-hot....This is not the Seattle I know!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Around this time of year, a lot of us here in Redmond like to spend our spare time outside.  Summers are beautiful in Washington State and we frequently check the weather to help plan our next hike or boating trip on the lake.  We know a lot of you are doing the same.

To get you this information quickly, we recently launched an Instant Answer for weather.  We teamed up with MSN Weather to give you the current conditions, high/low temperatures and four day forecast right on our search results page.

You can see this in action by searching for the weather in a specific location, like weather redmond wa or chicago temperature.  If you’re a touring rock star and forget where you are, or just madly efficient with your keystrokes - try searching for just weather.  We estimate your location and show the temperature near you. This doesn’t always work depending on how you connect to the Internet, but it’s usually pretty close.

In addition to sending feedback on this, we would really like to hear which instant answers you want us to build next.  Is there a specific kind of content you want to be able to find faster?  Something we could add to our page to make your life just a little bit easier?  Please let us know.

An Inconvenient Realization

11:30 pm - June 29, 2006 in Yahoo! Answers Team Blog (answers.yahoo.com)

At the end of his movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” Al Gore challenges the audience to find ways to reduce the size of their Carbon Footprint. When we returned home following the movie, my partner and I immediately set to work at the task.

We started by looking at the household basics.  We recycle, use energy efficient light bulbs, and carpool whenever possible.  What about fuel efficient cars?   Although we both drive fuel efficient vehicles, both get between 33-36 MPG, any car’s impact is not just how much gasoline it burns, but how much Green House Gas (GHG) it spits into the atmosphere in the process.

We did a search on Answers to find how much GHG his car produces, and found a great link to the official government site that keeps those statistics.  That’s when the bomb went off. His 1995 Nissan puts 5.7 tons of GHG into the atmosphere every year.  Needless to say, we were both stunned. His car weighs just over one ton, so it’s tough to imagine how much volume 5.7 tons of gas encompasses.   Curiosity quickly got the best of us, and we looked up the Toyota Prius, which clocks in at 3.4 tons.  We wondered whether switching cars was the best thing we could do, and whether it would be enough.  Today, Al Gore asks a very similar question: “What do you think it will take to reverse the effects of global climate change?

It will be very interesting to hear what the Answers community thinks, but I know we have our answer.  If the two of us can reduce greenhouse gasses by over two tons a year, just by our choice of car, imagine what would happen if others took up the challenge as well.  If we took the 137 million cars in the U.S. as a baseline, then action by just 10% of us could save nearly 340 million tons of GHG over the next 10 years.  It won’t reverse climate change, but it’s a 340 million ton start.

What have we done for you lately?

7:45 pm - June 29, 2006 in Official Google Blog

As you might imagine, we on the Google Video team use it for pretty much everything. It shouldn't be such a surprise, then, to know that the feature requests we get internally mirror those that you send to us. Namely, just like you, Googlers want to pay less and interact more. So this past week, we've been very busy rolling out changes to make this a reality.

First, more things are now free. We're doing a sponsored video test so you can watch premium videos without paying. (Perhaps we were inspired by the conversation Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett had about philanthropy with Charlie Rose).

Next, have you been itching to tell us (and the rest of the world) what you think of our videos? Now you can rate, label, and comment on them. We know you're dying to say something about this David Hasselhoff clip or the latest one about Diet Coke + Mentos.

Last, we made it easier for you to blog some of these entertaining pieces under the new "Share this video" link on the playback page. A few clicks and your current favorite is directly embedded into the most popular blogging platforms like Blogger, TypePad, MySpace and LiveJournal.

Stay tuned for another batch of features - and meanwhile, enjoy these.

Google Checkout API

5:48 pm - June 29, 2006 in Google Code Blog
Google Checkout, our recently unveiled checkout option, has an API that exposes sophisticated functionality and programmatic interaction via XML over HTTP. Once you've created a sandbox account, the Checkout API's equivalent of "Hello World" is quite easy using cURL:

curl -d '' https://:\

@sandbox.google.com/cws/v2\

/Merchant//request

When you're ready to start integrating with the Google Checkout API, read through the Developer's Guide, Sample Code and Developer's Cookbook (for implementation-focused articles), and connect with other API developers in the Developer's Forum.

A new chapter for authors

5:42 pm - June 29, 2006 in Inside Google Book Search

As I wrote in our debut post, this blog is about discovery. For a reader, that discovery might be a great book. For a publisher, it might be new audiences for previously obscure backlist titles. And for an author, it could be a new chapter in a budding career.

Susan Foote, a first-time author who joined the Google Book Search Partner Program last year, has an especially inspiring story to tell. In 1998, she set sail on a 41-foot sailing ketch to fulfill a lifelong dream: seeing the world by boat. The trip took her all the way from Lake Erie, Ohio to the shores of Opua, New Zealand. It also inspired her to write a book so she could share her experiences with people who dream of doing the same thing.

The book sold above expectations when it was first published in 2002. But three years later, after Foote decided to include it in Book Search, she had a wave of new orders, and started getting email from readers she wasn’t able to reach before. Says Foote in her Book Search success story:
I get letters from people telling me how happy they are to have found my book, and how it's made a big difference in their lives -- very often from older women. As I point out in my book, there are many books written by men who convinced their loves to go cruising, but few books written by the loves who did it. I'm happy to know that by writing about the second chapter in my life, I'm inspiring other women to start their own.
Very cool. If you’re an author or want to learn more about how the Partner Program works for authors, we invite you to visit our Author Resources page.
