Continuing to move forward – the Microsoft Malware Protection Center

9:03 pm - May 15, 2007 in Anti-Malware Engineering Team

Fresh off our visit to < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Japan, where we discussed issues important to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, we continue to move forward with our goal of being a premier anti-virus research and response center (R&R).   Last week’s news of our new global response centers has been well received and that’s excellent!  It’s important for our customers that we succeed at the set of goals we’ve declared and get ourselves into a leadership position not only to support the applications we are delivering, but to fine tune some of the processes we’ve created to better support our partners, the industry and the community at large who rely on MS and others to protect them from today’s threats.

When I arrived 8 months ago, MS had the makings of a team that was poised to break through to the next level of R&R. There were some key elements missing; I believe we have added those in the past 6 months and are prepared to see our goal realized. One of the key elements we added was opening the new centers in Dublin and Tokyo, and we have plans to add more centers soon. In addition, the new portal, which may be the most significant change, is now a home to display the day to day workings of the team, as well as be a place everyone can visit to see what we uncovered and track.

Check it out! www.microsoft.com/security/portal

On a more important note, our detection numbers are continuing upwards. I know this is a subject of ongoing interest for many, and we continue to push the team hard in this area because in the end it will be the most visible measure of our success.

We just once again had the OneCare product ICSA and West Coast Labs certified AND Forefront is now WestCoast Labs certified and is in the process of being ICSA certified as well. We feel very confident that we’ll achieve the VB100 Award, for both products as well when the results are published in June, by Virus Bulletin. This to me will exemplify the work we’ve been focusing on and continue to do so.

And finally, we established some key areas and defined a set of benchmarks imperative for us to achieve world class response credibility. This, of course, is the essential element given today’s targeted attacks are more advanced than ever before.

We’ve applied the basic principles our partners, that come before us have to provide world class response to customer queries (including automated responses and queue processing to customer submissions and of course analysts globally to respond regionally) and we have the added element that is unique to MS, which is the insight into the more than 400 million Windows users worldwide.< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

These customers have consistently asked us to provide support to the ever growing threat of viruses, worms, Trojans and unwanted programs that plague their environments today.

I’d ask that you continue to check back as we provide updates straight from the labs as well as from those watching and monitoring our success. Just this past week we released a new volume of our Security Intelligence Report.  The report outlines the trends that we have observed in the malicious software and potentially unwanted software landscapes over the last six months (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88436&clcid=0x409).

We have a lot more in store and a lot more that we can be counted on to deliver.

Thanks,

Vinny Gullotto

all good things come to an end!

4:25 pm - May 15, 2007 in Start.com News
I am listening to 'All good things come to an end' by Nelly Furtado as I write this blog post. No, not planned. It just happened to play randomly on my playlist - timely for this post.

This is a bittersweet moment as I reflect on what start.com accomplished from it's inception in February 2005, helping pioneer ajax homepages and gadgets on the web. We accomplished great things both in terms of technology as well as being an agile small team and connecting with our customers. A successful incubation project that evolved to live.com. Unfortunately it is now time for us to retire start.com as our incubation ground for live.com.  Effective next Tuesday, 5/22/07, start.com will redirect to live.com.

Are you an active start.com customer and want to keep your feeds?
1. if you don't have the 'add content' gadget, add it by hovering on the logo and clicking on 'add feeds and gadgets'
2. click on 'advanced' within the 'add content' gadget
3. at the bottom you'll see the option for 'click here to export your feed subscriptions to OPML', click on 'here'
4. save the file locally
5. you can import this file to live.com or your favorite rss reader

To import to live.com:
1. click on 'add stuff' in the upper left hand corner
2. click on 'advanced options'
3. browse for the opml file next to the 'import OPML file' option
4. once imported you'll find your subscriptions under 'my stuff' within the 'subscriptions' folder

Using Production Data to Test Can Make the Job Easier… But be Careful

3:24 pm - May 8, 2007 in Microsoft.com Operations
Using production data is a smart way to test. It provides the most cost effective way to generate data for testing. This allows testers to spend more time focusing on writing good test cases rather than taxing their brains to generate meaningless information...(read more)

Small Update

3:45 am - May 8, 2007 in My.live.com blog

Late last week, we released a minor update to Live.com. This update included the following changes:

  • International Collection Sharing - Users in many more countries can now share their collections in Windows Live Gallery. While all users have the ability to share their collections via email, we're excited to launch gallery integration for users around the world. We can't wait to see the collections our international users come up with!
  • Bug Fixes - We fixed a number of bugs, including one that caused some users to have their name displayed incorrectly. We'll continue making quality improvements to the site with every release.
  • Digg Feeds in the directory (U.S. only) - We've added some Digg feeds to the directory. Digg is very popular with several members of the Live.com team, so we thought we'd make these feeds easier for others to find :)
  • Mail gadget infrastructure - It's not turned on yet, but this release includes the big changes we need to get the mail gadget working again. There's a bit more work required from both us and the Windows Live Hotmail team, but we're happy to get this milestone behind us. We still can't offer any dates, but we're inching closer and closer to restoring this functionality. We'll keep you posted as we continue to make progress.

Thanks everyone - keep the feedback coming!
